Sharing art. Between public and private universes. Bellinzona and beyond.

Museo Civico Villa dei Cedri, Bellinzona

In 2025, the Cedar Villa Museum celebrates its 40th anniversary!

To celebrate this important milestone, this exhibition traces, from the last decades of the 19th century to the present day, the vibrant cultural and artistic scene that led to the founding of the city museum. Having become the sole capital of Canton Ticino in 1878, Bellinzona underwent a considerable urban expansion and modernization that directly impacted its artistic, archaeological, historical and natural science collections. In this context of renewal, numerous protagonists-patrons, art lovers, scholars, curators, collectors, gallery owners, artists but also associations and foundations-have nurtured the debate and contributed to the region's museum development. The intricate connections between public and private universes are thus revealed by their common passion: that for art.

Paintings, works on paper, sculptures, archaeological finds and objects of applied art, as well as documents and letters thus make it possible to reconstruct this fascinating history, little known but not without surprises that, even today, marks the culture and art of Canton Ticino.

An exhibition curated by Manuela Kahn-Rossi.
